Librela, a widely used arthritis drug for dogs, is under scrutiny by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after reports surfaced of severe side effects in some pets. The agency’s recent review suggests that while the medication is effective in treating arthritis pain, it may be linked to serious neurological issues, including seizures and muscle control problems. In more extreme cases, dogs have either died or had to be euthanized following the onset of these symptoms.

Librela, which gained FDA approval in 2023, is a monoclonal antibody injection designed to alleviate joint pain in dogs suffering from arthritis. Until recently, the drug’s label mentioned only mild side effects, such as skin infections or urinary tract issues. However, since the drug became widely available, pet owners have increasingly reported troubling experiences. Some claim their dogs lost the ability to stand or walk shortly after receiving the injection, while others say their pets’ health declined so rapidly that they did not survive.

The FDA’s investigation was triggered by more than 3,600 reports of adverse events submitted by pet owners and veterinarians. While the review doesn’t definitively prove Librela caused these issues, the patterns are concerning enough for the agency to recommend a label update to better reflect the potential risks. This recommendation serves as a precautionary measure to ensure veterinarians and pet owners are fully informed.

Zoetis, the pharmaceutical company behind Librela, remains firm in its stance that the drug is safe and effective. Dr. Richard Goldstein, Zoetis’s Chief Medical Officer, stated that over 21 million doses of Librela have been distributed globally, with adverse reactions being rare. “We stand 100% behind Librela,” Goldstein affirmed, emphasizing the company’s commitment to providing relief for dogs suffering from chronic pain.

Despite Zoetis’s confidence, the FDA’s alert highlights the importance of vigilance. Clinical trials often involve limited participants, which means some side effects may only emerge once a drug is in broader use. This post-market surveillance process helps regulators detect previously unrecognized risks and update safety information accordingly.

For dog owners, this development may prompt a closer conversation with their veterinarians about the benefits and risks of Librela. Arthritis is a painful and debilitating condition, and Librela has been a game-changer for many pets. However, understanding the potential side effects and monitoring their dogs closely after treatment is crucial.

As the FDA continues to monitor the situation, pet owners are encouraged to report any unusual symptoms their dogs may experience following Librela injections. While the vast majority of dogs tolerate the drug well, staying informed can help ensure pets receive the best possible care.
