Dog Sleeping Positions and What They Mean
Abstract
Dogs are incredibly expressive creatures. They convey how they feel by their body language and actions. One way that dogs communicate is by sleeping in different positions, which might reveal a lot about them! Dog sleeping positions can tell you what type of dog they are (e.g. cuddle bug or crazy legs), how they react to their person (e.g. clingy or independent), and why the dog performs certain things (e.g. digging before sleeping) (e.g. digging before sleeping).
If you’re one of those fur parents who have always been wondering about why your dog sleeps a certain way, keep reading!
The eight sleeping positions
There are 8 major resting positions for dogs, and each sleeping position says a lot about the dog. The following are the 8 dog positions we will discuss about in this article:
- Curled up (also known as a donut or fuzzy bagel)
- On their back (also known as crazy legs)
- The Superman Pose
- Back-to-back (also known as the Cuddle Bug)
- Side Position
- Lion Pose
- Laying on your clothes
- Circling and Digging

Curled up (also known as a donut or fuzzy bagel)
One of the most typical positions for dogs to sleep curled up in a ball. A dog sleeping in this pose has its chin resting on its tail, as is customary for dogs. In the fall and winter, dogs sleep in this position to keep their bodies warm and protect their organs. This is also the most prevalent position among wild animals. In spite of what some people believe, many happy dogs may also curl up in this position if they are feeling safe.

On their back (also known as crazy legs)
An indication that a dog is safe and secure is when they lay on their backs with their legs raised high in the air. When a dog is in the presence of its owner, they put themselves in a vulnerable position. As a result, your dog will feel safe and at home. Playful dogs are commonly seen in this stance in order to demonstrate their happiness to their owners.

With their arms and legs extended in the Superman posture, dogs are able to appear as if they’re flying. When a dog is feeling frisky and wants to indulge in some rough-housing, this is what they do. If your dog is in this position, it could signify that he or she is feeling quite secure and confident.
Back to back (also known as cuddle bug)
The fact that two dogs are sleeping back-to-back usually indicates that they are comfortable being close to one another. When pups are unable to regulate their own temperature, they are more likely to sleep side-by-side. It is a sign of trust and love when dogs lay next to each other.
When a dog sleeps in the side position, one or both of its hind legs are tucked under its body. This is a sign that the dog is at ease with you and that it trusts you. In this position, the dog’s faith in you is demonstrated, as they are in a vulnerable state.

Lion Pose
Dogs will sometimes sleep with their heads on their paws in a position that resembles a lion’s. This is a sign of a dog who is weak and worn out. Also, the lion posture could indicate that your dog is trying to get your attention, but he isn’t quite ready for a full-on cuddle just yet. It’s also possible that they’re alert to the prospect of a play.

Your dog’s desire to be in close proximity to your fragrance is evident when they lie down on your clothing. When a dog is frightened or stressed, he or she will typically do this to reassure themselves. In the same way, creating a personal haven for themselves is one of the many reasons dogs may circle and dig around your bed before they lie down.
Before going to sleep, some dogs will spin around in circles, while others will dig in the bed or blanket. This is known as nesting, and it’s frequently done in order to create a cozy bed for oneself. Don’t bother a dog who displays this behavior since they will want to be left alone until they have perfected their nest.
Keep your dog close when you sleep
Dogs who are able to stay close to their owners are considered to be the happiest. Dogs who sleep next to their owners develop a closer link with them and are more likely to be watchful of their well-being and safety. Our pet stairway will let your pup snuggle up next to you while you sleep.
